Elizabeth Reads

Book Addict

Monday Monday by Elizabeth Crooks

A gripping story of three college students brought together by a common tragedy. This novel follows these three students from their youth in the 1960's through adulthood. I was impressed that the author was able to maintain such an engaging story over so many stages of life. There was no point that I wanted to put this book down! The author did a wonderful job developing the characters with just enough background to help you identify with them but not overwhelm you with details of their character. It was easy to get to know them as you read the book. This is a beautifully written novel. I look forward to reading more by this author.

This novel will appeal to a wide variety of readers. I'd hesitate to call it anything other than "literary fiction".

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher FSG and fsgbookkeeping.com.

I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes

At 888 pages long this is not a quick read. It was definitely worth the time though. Hayes has created a thriller that is part spy novel, part political thriller, and part medical thriller. Amazingly he manages to deliver on all three. His storytelling technique is compelling and well thought out.I thoroughly enjoyed every one of the 888 pages!

I received a free copy of this book from Transworld Publishers.

The Wind is Not a River by Brian Payton

This beautiful, lyrical story set in the North East during WWII is reminiscent of Cold Mountain.  The author weaves alternately the story of John Easley, lost on an Aleutian island occupied by Japanese forces, with that of his wife Helen determined to find her husband. Payton does a beautiful job using the stark cold landscape and brutal environment as a backdrop for the troubled marriage of this young couple and their struggle for survival. The quiet beauty of the writing reflects the quiet beauty of love during a time of war. I believe this will be on my list of best books of 2014!
